Earth Day Garage Cleaning Gains Space and Green

Earth Day is April 22nd and that’s an excellent time to clean out your garage. Chances are that you have a lot of things in your garage that can be recycled, upcycled, sold or repurposed so you’d be doing your part for the Earth and your garage and you might make a little cash in the process. At Global Garage Flooring & Design, we want everyone to have a garage they can be proud of so whatever your motivation; spring cleaning, Earth Day or getting ready for a new garage floor or makeover, we have some suggestions of where to get rid of your stuff.

Busy corner of an overloaded garage.

Recycle Locally.
Most municipalities have recycling centers so naturally that can be your first stop. There is usually someone there that will direct you where things go in other words, TVs go in a different place than mattresses. The only downfall is depending on the size of your recycling center, they may not take large items, or hazardous materials and that could include many things from fluorescent lights to TVs. In fact some places make you pay to leave a large console TV.

The first directory is simply a recycle search.  In using it, many of the places were far so it depends on what places are registered, but it’s a place to start. You can plug in your location and what the item is and it will show you via a pin on a map as well as a list of places nearest you that will accept your items.

Electronics Recycling.
It can be scary thing if you are getting rid of a computer or something that contains personal information. It’s always best if you can wipe the information but sometimes chargers get lost etc. and you don’t have that option. For these reasons you want to take it to a certified electronics recycler. There are no guarantees unless you wipe the device yourself but this is highly preferable to surrendering it to garbage pickup. Check out this electronics recycling site to find out more about certified recyclers. There is a map, so you can find places all over the U.S.

Dispose Properly of Hazardous Waste.
You may want to read this before you dismiss the fact you might have Hazardous Waste to get rid of. It’s almost guaranteed that every household has at least one if not more items that are considered hazardous waste. A few common examples are:
Harsh chemical cleaners
Paints/thinners
Antifreeze
Weed killers
Insecticide/pesticide
You can be fined if you don’t dispose of them correctly, and even worse, you can potentially harm a person or the environment.

Sell stuff Online.
Do you have Outgrown kids toys or other things that cost just enough that you don’t want to throw them away? Those things can be put on Ebay, or a town-wide Facebook Marketplace  or Let Go. Additionally, here is a directory that lists a bunch of sites and apps you can use to get some cash for your gently used items like clothes, instruments, electronics and much more.

Have it hauled away.
If you have sorted everything out and you are left with junk, you can always call 1-800-GOT JUNK or click the link and have it hauled away.

Once your garage is clean and you have some extra cash, Global Garage Flooring & Design can help you design a space that you can store new stuff more efficiently employing walls, and ceilings and have a beautiful new floor that can cut down on dust so you can use your garage for more than just storing old junk!

Garage Floor in Spring Branch, Texas

Spring Branch, Tx.- Our journey took us due north of San Antonio to a little
town called Spring Branch. It’s located right on the Guadalupe River, about
30 miles due south of Johnson City, Tx. In Spring Branch there are many
beautiful subdivisions, some along the river, and some within the Hill
Country. Mystic River, the subdivision our garage rediscovery took place.
Our wonderful customers enjoyed a very spacious home on about 2 acres with
plenty of trees and a very open back yard. German Brown Trout is an
extremely popular color down this way, and today was no exception as it was
our customers color of choice. This color went splendidly with the colors of
their home, all of the earthly tones throughout the house it was a perfect
match. The country up around Spring Branch is beautiful, full of color, and
our customers subdivision was no exception. The picture below is directly
across of the entrance of the subdivision. This time of year is an absolute
wonderful time to rediscover your garage, let us assist you, as the Spurs
assist each other in the most unselfish of ways, rediscover your garage, and Go Spurs Go!

Garage Floor San Antonio, Texas, Dominion, Venice court

San Antonio, Tx. Dominion- Another wonderful day to rediscover your garage, and once again we find ourselves in the lovely Dominion, this spacious subdivision features an expanse of beautiful homes, and today’s home was no exception. Our homeowner, Claudia had her eye on this home for some time, a couple years after purchasing another home down the street this home, her dream home, was finally available! She jumped on it and set to work getting it just right. In her other home she had a very similar garage floor to the ones that we provide, the only difference was the chemical used. Our chemical is polyasparic, whereas the other floor that had been done was an epoxy. An epoxy is a much more brittle chemical than ours. It will crack unlike ours, ours moves with the floor and is very flexible. Another major difference in our two chemicals is the application. An epoxy utilizes a method known as acid-washing. Acid-washing essentially scores the concrete and creates a relative rough and naked surface to apply on. However, doing this is harmful in two ways. First of all if the acid gets into the grass or other landscaping around the driveway it can kill this landscaping. Second, using this method doesn’t create a surface that is ideal for applying to, it only bonds with some of the epoxy instead of all, which creates the common problem of peeling. Our process of grinding creates a much better bond because it exposes more of the subfloor and gets a very consistent bond throughout. Claudia will be happy with this German Brown Trout floor for many a year to come, and we wish her all the best in her dream home! Go Spurs Go!!

George Straight and Garage Floors in the Dominion, San Antonio, Texas

A gorgeous day in San Antonio to rediscover your garage. Today our journey took us to a very gorgeous subdivision on the northwestern side of the city, The Dominion. This sprawling subdivision is know to house most of the Spurs as well as a country singer most affectionately refer to as The King, Mr. George Strait. The Dominion sits on the southern half of the beautiful Hill Country. Houses of every shape, size, and color adorn those hills, with breathtaking architecture and landscaping throughout. The Dominion really is a site to behold, a site that our friend Ed has enjoyed for many years and many more to come. Ed rediscovered his garage, again! This is the second floor that Ed has done with us, both done in German Brown Trout. He had said that we were his first call, even before the movers, after he had acquired his new home. He was unwittingly happy with our work, and his floor the first time that he couldn’t wait to have us back! Like many of you, Ed was very interested in our process of taking a cracked, dirty, sometimes stained concrete floor, and turning it into the masterpieces that you see. There are four major steps that go into every floor; grinding, priming, chipping (where the flakes are spread out), and top coating. Below are some of the steps in action. After a long and hot day (we are in Texas y’all) Ed is bestowed with a beautiful garage floor. Rediscover your garage floor, and Go Spurs Go!

Cordillera Ranch, Boerne, TX

Boerne, Texas- Today we embarked on another garage rediscovery, this time in beautiful Cordilla Ranch, about 10 miles east of Boerne.  Cordillera Ranch is located within the heart of the beautiful Hill Country, a portion of property between Kerrville, TX through New Braunfels, TX.  It is affectionately called that by us locals due to the many hills and valleys with in the land.  It is gorgeous this time of year, painted with Bluebonnets, Indian Paintbrushes, and other native flowers.  Cordillera Ranch is smack-dab in the heart of it.  This garage rediscovery was done for a lovely couple who are building their first home, they picked a wonderful color, German Brown Trout, which goes with the rock used to build homes down here almost perfectly.  German Brown Trout is a mixture of light tans, browns, a small amount of black chip, as well as a lighter skin tone color. This color is one of our most popular colors, it is able to pull in many colors through out most houses as well as hide dirt extremely well due to the earthy tones throughout. This was a wonderful floor to work on, some great people to work with, and a beautiful day to rediscover their garage. GoSpursGo!
